Jiří Rathouský (1924 - 2003)

Leading Czechoslovak graphic designer and typographer who was involved in promotional and book graphics since the 1950s.

He was a co-founder of the Štursa Group in 1952 and the Máj Group in 1957, and also collaborated on the design of the Czechoslovak pavilions at EXPO 58 in Brussels, EXPO 67 in Montreal and EXPO 70 in Osaka.

His contribution to information design was a major influence on the visual environment of Czechoslovak transport (Prague Metro, Main Station, Prague-Holešovice Station, information system for Czech Railways, etc.).

In the 1990s, he worked mainly in information design, exhibition design, type design, product design, and free graphics.

He collaborated with his wife Dora Nováková on a number of projects.

He was an active member of the Horizont group, for whose exhibitions he created posters, as well as a member of the Typo& association, SČUG Hollar and the Association of Applied Graphics in Prague.

The exhibition presents a cross-section of his work from his still living work - a navigation system he created for the Prague metro, through the book covers of GAMA by Odeon publishing house, for which he created his own font Alphapipe, to the graphic design of the then emerging housing estate Jižní město II - one of the first attempts at a unified visual identity of the city. Film and theatre posters, book covers and typo-works will also be on display. 

The exhibition was prepared by collector and multimedia artist Martin Hůla, the posters were lent by Pavel Rajčan, curator of the Terry's Socks poster collection in Prague.
